Dried brown seaweed sold in tablets and capsules as a natural iodine source. Species vary enormously in iodine content, and unlike potassium iodide the dose in a given tablet is rarely predictable.

Kelp is the least controllable way to take iodine. Analyses of commercial kelp supplements have found iodine content varying by more than tenfold between products and differing substantially from the label, with some single tablets supplying several times the 1,100 µg upper limit. Case reports document both thyrotoxicosis and hypothyroidism following kelp supplement use, and hijiki in particular carries inorganic arsenic at levels that have prompted food-safety advisories in several countries. Seaweed as a food, eaten as part of a varied diet, is a different proposition from a concentrated tablet taken daily for "thyroid support".

Regulation: Sold as a dietary supplement with no pre-market efficacy or safety review and, critically, no requirement to standardise iodine content. Several food safety agencies advise against regular consumption of hijiki because of inorganic arsenic. The 1,100 µg/day iodine upper limit applies to iodine from any source, kelp included.

There is no dependable evidence that kelp supplements affect body weight. The marketing rests on the association between thyroid hormone and metabolic rate, which does not translate into weight change in people with normal thyroid function.

Kelp is sold for metabolism and thyroid function on the basis of its iodine content. In people who are iodine-sufficient, extra iodine does not improve thyroid function or energy, and unpredictable dosing makes kelp a poor way to correct a deficiency even where one exists.

  • Too much

    Unpredictable iodine content causing thyroid dysfunction

    Published case reports describe both hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism after kelp supplementation, and analyses have found iodine content varying more than tenfold between products and diverging widely from labels. This is the least controllable iodine source available and the easiest way to exceed the upper limit without knowing it.

    Arsenic and heavy metals

    Brown seaweeds concentrate arsenic; hijiki in particular carries inorganic arsenic at levels that have led several food safety agencies to advise against regular consumption. Kelp also accumulates cadmium and lead depending on harvest waters. Testing is not routine for supplements.

  • Worth knowing

    Existing thyroid disease and pregnancy

    Anyone with autoimmune thyroid disease, nodular goitre or a thyroid history should not take kelp. In pregnancy, where iodine genuinely matters, a standardised potassium iodide dose is far preferable to an unpredictable seaweed tablet.

  • Interaction

    Affects thyroid medication and adds vitamin K and potassium

    Iodine load can destabilise levothyroxine and antithyroid drug dosing. Some seaweed products also contribute vitamin K, relevant to warfarin, and potassium.

The whole-food form, where one exists. The evidence for a concentrated extract rarely transfers to the food, or the other way round — these are cross-links, not equivalents.
