Purified beta-glucan polysaccharide, most often extracted from baker's yeast cell walls, sometimes from mushrooms or oats. Structure differs by source, and the differences matter more than the shared name suggests.
Beta-glucan is a single word covering chemically distinct molecules with quite different evidence. Cereal beta-glucan from oats and barley is a soluble viscous fibre with a well-established cholesterol-lowering effect at around three grams a day, recognised by regulators in the US and Europe. Yeast and fungal beta-glucans are branched 1,3/1,6 structures that are not viscous, act on innate immune receptors rather than on bile acids, and have an entirely separate literature — mostly trials of a proprietary yeast preparation in athletes and stressed adults reporting fewer upper respiratory symptom days, largely funded by the ingredient manufacturer. Selling one on the evidence of the other is a common and thorough confusion.

The well-established LDL-lowering effect at around three grams daily belongs to cereal beta-glucan from oats and barley, a viscous soluble fibre. Yeast and fungal beta-glucan isolates are structurally different, are not viscous, and have not shown the same effect.
What may be going on: Cereal beta-glucan increases the viscosity of gut contents, reducing bile acid reabsorption and prompting the liver to draw on circulating cholesterol. Branched fungal beta-glucans do not form the same gel.

Oat, yeast and mushroom beta-glucans share a name and little else. Cereal beta-glucan has an authorised cholesterol claim and no immune evidence; yeast beta-glucan has a contested immune literature and no cholesterol effect. A product citing one body of evidence while containing the other is the standard trick in this category.

A compound whose purpose is to engage innate immune receptors is a poor choice for anyone on immunosuppression after transplant, or with an autoimmune condition under treatment. This should go through the specialist managing that treatment.
Allergy
Yeast sensitivity and coeliac considerations
Baker's yeast beta-glucan is not appropriate for anyone with a yeast allergy, and people with Crohn's disease often carry antibodies to yeast mannan. Cereal beta-glucan from barley or oats raises gluten questions unless the product is certified.
Too much
Digestive effects with cereal beta-glucan
Three grams a day of viscous fibre causes bloating and wind in some people, particularly when introduced quickly. Increasing gradually with adequate fluid is the usual approach.
