About Zeaxanthin

The xanthophyll carotenoid concentrated at the very centre of the macula, where it outnumbers lutein. Supplements supply dietary zeaxanthin, and some also contain meso-zeaxanthin, which the eye normally makes from lutein.

Zeaxanthin is almost always studied alongside lutein rather than separately, which makes its independent contribution difficult to assess. In AREDS2 it was given at 2 mg with 10 mg of lutein, so the trial supports the combination rather than either component. The interesting distinction is meso-zeaxanthin, an isomer that is not meaningfully present in food and is normally formed in the retina by conversion from lutein; supplements that add it are supplying something the eye usually makes for itself, on the argument that central macular pigment rises faster. Whether that translates into any visual or disease outcome has not been shown.

Zeaxanthin was part of the AREDS2 formulation associated with slower progression of intermediate macular degeneration, but it was never tested separately from lutein. The evidence supports the combination; the independent contribution of zeaxanthin is unknown.

Trials of carotenoid formulas containing zeaxanthin report improved contrast sensitivity and glare recovery in some populations. The studies are small and it is difficult to separate zeaxanthin from lutein in any of them.

    Never tested on its own

    Every substantial trial gave zeaxanthin with lutein and usually inside a wider formula. A zeaxanthin-only product is being sold on evidence generated for a combination.

  • Worth knowing

    Meso-zeaxanthin is not a dietary carotenoid

    The eye normally produces meso-zeaxanthin from lutein. Supplying it directly is a newer intervention with a shorter safety record and no outcome evidence, whatever the macular pigment measurements show.

  • Too much

    Skin tint at high intakes

    As with other carotenoids, high intake can yellow the skin. It is cosmetic and fades once intake stops.

  • Worth knowing

    The AREDS2 caveats apply

    The evidence concerns people with existing intermediate macular degeneration taking a full multi-nutrient formula. It does not extend to healthy eyes or to zeaxanthin alone.

The whole-food form, where one exists. The evidence for a concentrated extract rarely transfers to the food, or the other way round — these are cross-links, not equivalents.
