Muscle protein synthesis
Whey protein raises muscle protein synthesis acutely and, across many randomised trials and meta-analyses, protein supplementation during resistance training produces greater gains in lean mass and strength than training alone. The effect is real, modest in size, and disappears once total protein intake is already adequate.
What may be going on: Rapid digestion produces a sharp rise in plasma leucine, which activates mTORC1 signalling and initiates translation. The magnitude of the leucine peak, not just total protein, appears to drive the response.
Strong evidence. Consistent findings across multiple good-quality human studies.
