About Whey protein concentrate

The protein fraction of milk whey, filtered to between 35% and 80% protein with the remainder as lactose, milk fat and minerals. Most retail whey powder is 70–80% protein concentrate.

Whey is the best-characterised protein supplement and the reference against which others are measured, for two reasons: it is high in leucine at roughly 10–11% of its amino acids, and it digests fast, producing a sharp rise in blood amino acids that triggers muscle protein synthesis. What the evidence actually supports is narrower than the marketing: meta-analysis shows protein supplementation adds a modest amount of lean mass during resistance training, with the benefit disappearing once total daily protein reaches roughly 1.6 g per kilogram of body weight. Whey is a convenient way to reach that total, not a separate anabolic agent.

Whey protein raises muscle protein synthesis acutely and, across many randomised trials and meta-analyses, protein supplementation during resistance training produces greater gains in lean mass and strength than training alone. The effect is real, modest in size, and disappears once total protein intake is already adequate.

What may be going on: Rapid digestion produces a sharp rise in plasma leucine, which activates mTORC1 signalling and initiates translation. The magnitude of the leucine peak, not just total protein, appears to drive the response.

    Milk protein allergy and lactose

    Whey is a milk protein and is unsuitable for anyone with cow’s milk protein allergy. Concentrate also retains meaningful lactose — often 4–8% by weight — which is the usual reason lactose-intolerant people get bloating and diarrhoea from it and tolerate isolate better.

    Heavy metal contamination in protein powders

    Independent testing programmes have repeatedly found lead, cadmium and arsenic in protein powders, with some products exceeding the thresholds used by those programmes in a single daily serving. Plant proteins tend to test higher than dairy proteins. Third-party contaminant testing is the only practical safeguard.

    Analytical surveys have repeatedly found undeclared steroids and stimulants in sports supplements. For anyone subject to anti-doping testing, only products certified by an independent testing programme are a defensible choice, and strict liability means the athlete carries the consequence.

    Once daily protein reaches roughly 1.6 g per kilogram, adding more has not been shown to improve training outcomes. A great deal of protein powder is sold to people already past that point.

    High protein intake does not damage healthy kidneys, but in established chronic kidney disease protein intake is a clinical variable that is usually managed deliberately. That is a conversation with a nephrologist rather than a supplement decision.
