Exercise performance
Meta-analyses consistently show improved performance in high-intensity efforts lasting roughly one to ten minutes, including repeated sprints, middle-distance events and high-intensity intervals. The effect is small but reliable, best documented in trained athletes, and diminishes for efforts much shorter or longer than that window.
What may be going on: Raising extracellular bicarbonate steepens the gradient for hydrogen ion efflux from working muscle, delaying the intracellular pH fall that impairs contractile function and glycolytic enzyme activity.
Strong evidence. Consistent findings across multiple good-quality human studies.
