Resistant starch reliably increases colonic fermentation and faecal butyrate, and shifts the microbial community towards butyrate producers. The microbial and biochemical effects are well replicated; the health consequences are not established.
What may be going on: Amylose in a resistant conformation escapes pancreatic amylase and is fermented in the distal colon, where butyrate is the dominant product.
Moderate evidence. Several human studies point the same way, with real caveats.
