The major phospholipid of cell membranes and the principal choline-containing lipid in food, purified from soy or sunflower lecithin. Ordinary lecithin contains only a fraction of it.
Phosphatidylcholine is worth separating from lecithin because the difference is large: commercial lecithin is typically twenty to thirty per cent phosphatidylcholine, with the rest other phospholipids and oil, so a purified product delivers several times more per gram. Its most serious research programme was in liver disease, where polyenylphosphatidylcholine showed promise in baboons and then failed in a large randomised trial in people with alcohol-related liver disease. As a choline source it works — choline is an essential nutrient with a defined requirement — but the same choline is available more cheaply from eggs, and there is an unresolved question about gut bacteria converting choline to trimethylamine, which the liver oxidises to TMAO, a metabolite associated with cardiovascular risk in observational work.

Choline is an essential nutrient involved in membrane synthesis and methyl metabolism, and most adults fall short of the adequate intake. That is a nutritional fact about choline rather than a demonstrated benefit of phosphatidylcholine capsules.

Choline is required to make acetylcholine, and trials of phosphatidylcholine in memory and in dementia have been small and largely negative. There is not enough evidence for a cognitive claim.

The TMAO question
Gut bacteria convert choline to trimethylamine, which the liver oxidises to TMAO — a metabolite associated with cardiovascular risk in observational studies. Supplemental phosphatidylcholine raises TMAO measurably. Whether this translates into risk is unresolved, and it is a reason to prefer meeting choline needs from food while the question stands.

Fishy body odour and gastrointestinal effects
High choline intakes cause a fishy body odour, sweating and gastrointestinal upset, and very high intakes can lower blood pressure. The tolerable upper intake level for choline in adults is 3.5 g daily.
Worth knowing
Injectable use is unapproved and has caused harm
Phosphatidylcholine injections marketed for dissolving fat are not approved, and regulators have warned about them following reports of disfigurement, infection and tissue damage. That is a different product from the oral supplement and should not be confused with it.

Most phosphatidylcholine is soy-derived. Purified phospholipid should contain negligible soy protein, but sunflower-derived alternatives exist for anyone who prefers to avoid the question.
