About Pea protein

Protein isolated from yellow split peas, typically 80–85% protein. It is rich in lysine and arginine and comparatively low in methionine, which is the usual limiting amino acid in legume protein.

Pea protein has become the default dairy-free option, and the evidence supporting it is real but thin. The most-cited trial randomised young men to pea protein, whey or placebo alongside twelve weeks of arm training and found pea equivalent to whey for biceps thickness — a study funded by a pea protein producer, with a small sample and a single muscle group as the endpoint. Mechanistically the case is reasonable: pea protein supplies enough leucine to raise muscle protein synthesis if the serving is large enough, though it needs a slightly bigger serving than whey to get there.

    Heavy metals in plant proteins

    Independent testing programmes have found plant-based protein powders, including pea, averaging higher lead and cadmium than dairy-based products, occasionally exceeding programme thresholds in a single serving. Third-party contaminant testing is the only practical check.

  • Allergy

    Legume allergy and cross-reactivity

    Pea allergy exists and cross-reactivity with peanut and lentil has been reported. It is a legume, not a hypoallergenic default.

  • Worth knowing

    Lower leucine per gram

    Reaching the leucine threshold takes a larger serving than with whey. Products that match whey serving sizes gram for gram are delivering a weaker anabolic signal.

  • Too much

    Digestive effects and taste

    Some people report bloating from pea protein, and the characteristic legume flavour is the main reason it is usually heavily flavoured.
