Blood lipid profile
At 4 g/day, prescription omega-3 ethyl esters lower triglycerides substantially in people with severe hypertriglyceridaemia, replicated across registration trials and confirmed in meta-analyses. This is the best-established lipid effect of any omega-3 preparation, and it is the basis for the licence.
What may be going on: Reduced hepatic VLDL-triglyceride synthesis and secretion together with increased fatty-acid oxidation and lipoprotein lipase activity.
Moderate evidence. Several human studies point the same way, with real caveats.
