Respiratory function
A large randomised trial reported fewer exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease with 600 mg twice daily over a year, and meta-analyses support a modest benefit at higher doses. Lower doses in earlier European trials were not effective.
What may be going on: The free thiol group breaks disulfide bonds in mucus, reducing viscosity, and NAC supplies cysteine for glutathione synthesis in airway tissue.
Moderate evidence. Several human studies point the same way, with real caveats.
