About Hydrogen water

Water with molecular hydrogen gas dissolved in it, produced by electrolysis machines, effervescent magnesium tablets or pre-packaged pouches. Hydrogen is poorly soluble in water and escapes rapidly from open containers.

Molecular hydrogen has a plausible-sounding mechanism — selective scavenging of hydroxyl radicals, proposed in a 2007 rodent paper — and a human literature composed almost entirely of very small trials, most from Japan, Korea and China, with sample sizes in the tens and outcomes ranging from liver enzymes to exercise soreness to mood. No large trial has been conducted for any indication. Beyond the evidence question there is a physical one: hydrogen is barely soluble in water, it escapes through plastic and out of an open glass within minutes, and the concentrations reaching a person are rarely measured. Products differ enormously in whether they deliver any dissolved hydrogen at the point of drinking.

    The human literature consists of dozens of studies with sample sizes in the tens, clustered in a few research groups and countries, across a scattering of unrelated outcomes. That pattern — many tiny positive studies, no large ones — is characteristic of a literature that has not been tested properly rather than one that has passed a test.

    Hydrogen is poorly soluble, escapes through plastic bottles and leaves an open glass within minutes. Whether a given product delivers measurable dissolved hydrogen at the moment of drinking is usually unknown, which makes the dose in most consumer use unquantified.

    Magnesium load from tablet products

    Effervescent hydrogen tablets generate hydrogen from elemental magnesium, so each tablet contributes magnesium. Several tablets a day can add enough to cause loose stools and to matter for anyone with kidney impairment.

  • Worth knowing

    Electrolysis devices and ionised water claims

    Some machines are sold alongside claims about ionised or alkaline water that have no scientific basis and that regulators have acted against. The hydrogen argument and the alkaline water argument are separate, and the latter is not supported.
