About Guggul

The oleoresin of a thorny Indian tree, standardised to guggulsterones. A purified fraction known as guggulipid was developed and licensed in India as a lipid-lowering medicine.

Guggul is an instructive case of a promising Indian trial record failing to replicate. Studies in India reported meaningful cholesterol reductions; a well-conducted US randomised trial found LDL cholesterol rose rather than fell, and hypersensitivity rashes were common. The plant is also endangered in the wild, which has consequences for what is in the bottle.

Regulation: Guggulipid has been approved as a lipid-lowering medicine in India. Commiphora wightii is listed as endangered, which raises both sustainability and substitution concerns for material sold elsewhere as a supplement.

Evidence is limited and contradictory for guggul and cholesterol. Indian trials reported reductions while a well-conducted US trial found LDL cholesterol rose, alongside frequent rashes. That disagreement has not been resolved.

What may be going on: Guggulsterones antagonise the farnesoid X receptor in laboratory models, which alters bile acid and cholesterol handling.

Commiphora wightii is endangered in the wild, which creates commercial pressure to substitute other Commiphora resins. Adulteration with other gums has been documented.
