About Essential amino acids (EAAs)

A blend of the nine amino acids the body cannot synthesise, supplied in free form. Unlike BCAAs, an EAA blend contains everything required to build muscle protein.

EAAs are the version of the BCAA idea that actually works, and the comparison is instructive. Free-form essential amino acids raise muscle protein synthesis at doses as low as 6 g, and the response is driven by the essential fraction — non-essential amino acids add nothing to it. The advantage over whole protein is speed and the absence of digestion, which matters mainly in clinical settings and in older adults with anabolic resistance. For a healthy person eating enough protein, an EAA drink is a more expensive way to obtain what a protein serving already supplies.

    Tracer studies show a synthetic response from about 6 g of EAAs, rising with dose and with leucine content. Roughly 10–15 g of EAAs is broadly comparable to 25–30 g of whole protein for this purpose.

    Trials in older adults deliberately dosed EAAs between meals, because taken with a meal they tend to displace food and add nothing to a protein feeding that already crosses the threshold. That between-meal design was a tested choice, though the comparison was against meal displacement rather than against timing as such.

Free-form essential amino acids stimulate muscle protein synthesis in a dose-dependent way, and trials in older adults report gains in lean mass when given between meals. The advantage over whole protein is speed of absorption rather than a different effect, and it matters most where protein intake is inadequate or anabolic resistance is present.

    Redundant when protein intake is adequate

    A protein serving that crosses the leucine threshold already supplies all nine essential amino acids. EAA products are useful where whole protein is impractical or intake is low, not as an addition on top of enough food.

    Nitrogen load in kidney and liver disease

    Free amino acids are absorbed rapidly and raise urea production. In advanced kidney or liver disease, amino acid supplementation is a clinical decision, and specialised EAA formulations exist precisely because the ordinary ones are not appropriate.

    Taste and digestive effects

    Free amino acids taste bitter and can cause nausea at higher doses, which is why most products are heavily flavoured.
