About Eggshell membrane

The thin fibrous layer between an egg white and its shell, separated industrially and dried into a powder. It contains collagen, elastin, glycosaminoglycans and glucosamine in small amounts.

Eggshell membrane is a genuinely elegant idea — an abundant by-product of egg processing that happens to contain most of the connective tissue components sold separately as joint supplements — and a small, narrow evidence base. The trials are almost all of one branded preparation, mostly funded by its manufacturer, and report reductions in joint pain and stiffness within a week or two at 500 mg daily. Independent replication outside that commercial relationship is limited. The dose is strikingly low compared with glucosamine and chondroitin, which is either an argument for an active signalling mechanism or a reason for scepticism, depending on how the trials are read.

Small randomised trials report reduced joint pain and stiffness within one to two weeks at 500 mg daily, including in people with exercise-related joint discomfort. Nearly all of this evidence concerns one proprietary preparation and was manufacturer-funded, and independent replication is limited.

What may be going on: The membrane supplies collagen, elastin, hyaluronic acid and glycosaminoglycans, and has reduced inflammatory cytokine production in laboratory work. The effective dose is far lower than for isolated glucosamine, which the mechanism does not obviously explain.

    Eggshell membrane carries residual egg white protein, and egg is a major allergen capable of causing anaphylaxis. Anyone with egg allergy should not take it, regardless of processing claims.

    The trial literature is essentially the evidence base for a single branded ingredient, generated largely with its manufacturer's support. Generic eggshell membrane powder has no evidence of its own.

    Published studies run weeks rather than months, in fewer than a hundred participants each, with self-reported pain as the endpoint. Longer-term data do not exist.
