Exercise performance
Meta-analyses report improved time to exhaustion and reduced oxygen cost of submaximal exercise, with the clearest effects in recreationally trained people and in moderate-to-severe intensity efforts. Benefits in elite endurance athletes are small or absent, and results in high-intensity intermittent sport are mixed.
What may be going on: Nitrate is reduced to nitrite by oral bacteria and then to nitric oxide, improving mitochondrial efficiency and blood flow to type II muscle fibres.
Moderate evidence. Several human studies point the same way, with real caveats.
