An essential nutrient grouped with the B vitamins, used to build cell membrane phospholipids and the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. Bitartrate is the cheapest supplemental salt and delivers about 41% choline by weight.
Choline is genuinely essential, genuinely under-consumed on paper — most national surveys find average intakes below the Adequate Intake — and largely unstudied as a supplement. The interesting evidence concerns pregnancy, where choline demand rises sharply and small trials have examined infant cognitive measures, and liver fat, where deficiency reliably causes steatosis in controlled feeding studies. The nootropic marketing is much weaker: choline bitartrate crosses into the brain poorly compared with citicoline or alpha-GPC, and trials of choline supplementation for memory in healthy adults have not shown benefit. Its other complication is that gut bacteria convert choline to TMAO, a metabolite associated with cardiovascular risk in observational work.

Controlled feeding studies show that choline deprivation causes liver fat accumulation and raised liver enzymes, which resolve on repletion. Whether supplementing above adequacy improves fatty liver in people eating normally has not been established.
What may be going on: Choline is needed to make phosphatidylcholine for VLDL assembly; without it the liver cannot export triglyceride and fat accumulates.

Fishy body odour, sweating and low blood pressure at high doses
Gram-level choline produces trimethylamine, which is excreted in sweat and breath and smells of fish. Hypotension and sweating are the other dose-limiting effects and are the basis of the 3,500 mg/day upper limit.

TMAO and cardiovascular risk
Gut bacteria convert choline to trimethylamine, which the liver oxidises to TMAO — a metabolite associated with cardiovascular events in observational studies. Whether supplemental choline raises risk is unresolved, but it is a reason not to take large doses casually.

People with the metabolic condition trimethylaminuria cannot oxidise trimethylamine and are advised to restrict choline; supplements make the odour substantially worse.

Choline bitartrate is about 41% choline, so a 500 mg capsule supplies roughly 205 mg of choline. Labels vary in which figure they state, making products hard to compare.
