The entire commercial case for C60 rests on a single 2012 rodent paper reporting that rats given C60 dissolved in olive oil lived far longer than controls. That study used six animals per group, was not designed as a lifespan study, has never been replicated, and drew substantial methodological criticism — including from researchers who noted the control animals died unusually early. No human trial of C60 has been conducted for any purpose. Meanwhile the toxicology is genuinely unsettled: fullerenes generate reactive oxygen species when exposed to light, their behaviour depends heavily on how they are prepared and dispersed, and long-term ingestion of an engineered nanomaterial has no safety record in people at all. Products are frequently sold with disclaimers indicating they are not for human consumption.
