Exercise performance
Meta-analyses covering many controlled trials show beta-alanine improves performance in high-intensity exercise lasting roughly 60 seconds to 4 minutes, by a small but consistent margin of around 2–3%. Effects on efforts shorter than 60 seconds or lasting beyond about 10 minutes are minimal, which fits the buffering mechanism precisely.
What may be going on: Beta-alanine is the rate-limiting precursor for carnosine, an intramuscular pH buffer. Raising muscle carnosine increases the capacity to buffer the hydrogen ions produced during intense glycolytic effort.
Strong evidence. Consistent findings across multiple good-quality human studies.
