About Bacillus subtilis

A soil and gut-associated spore-forming bacterium, familiar from natto, the fermented soybean food. Sold in "soil-based" spore probiotic blends and as single strains such as DE111.

Bacillus subtilis is where the marketing gets ahead of the evidence most obviously. Spore products are sold on the premise that soil organisms are what humans evolved alongside and that modern hygiene removed them — a story, not a finding. Human trials of specific strains are few, small and supplier-funded, covering stool consistency, occasional immune markers and, in some cases, body composition alongside training. Some Bacillus strains also carry transferable antibiotic resistance genes or produce enterotoxins, which is why regulators evaluate them strain by strain rather than as a species.

    Bacillus species have caused bacteraemia and, rarely, endocarditis in vulnerable patients. Spore-based products should not be started by critically ill or severely immunosuppressed people without specialist advice.

    Some strains of this genus carry transferable antibiotic resistance genes or produce enterotoxins, which is why safety assessment is done strain by strain. A product selling "soil-based organisms" without strain identification has not passed any such assessment in public.
