About Bacillus coagulans

A spore-forming bacterium that survives heat, acid and shelf storage far better than lactobacilli, which is why it appears in shelf-stable foods and drinks. Historically and incorrectly marketed as "Lactobacillus sporogenes".

The spore format solves a real problem — most probiotic organisms die in transit, on the shelf and in the stomach, while B. coagulans spores germinate in the small intestine — and it is why this organism has spread into protein bars and beverages. The efficacy evidence is another matter: trials of GBI-30 6086 and MTCC 5856 report improvements in abdominal symptoms, and several also report improvements in protein absorption or muscle recovery, but they are small, short and overwhelmingly funded by the ingredient suppliers. It is a good delivery story attached to a thin outcome literature.

Regulation: Certain strains hold self-affirmed GRAS status for use in foods in the US. Sold as a dietary supplement with no pre-market efficacy review. The old name "Lactobacillus sporogenes" is taxonomically invalid — lactobacilli do not form spores — and its continued use on labels is a warning sign about the manufacturer.
