About wheat bran

The outer layers of the wheat kernel, separated during milling of white flour. Almost half its weight is insoluble fibre, which makes it one of the most concentrated fibre sources in the food supply. The USDA reference entry is for crude bran, which is eaten by the spoonful rather than the bowl.

Wheat bran is the best-evidenced food for increasing stool weight and shortening transit time, with a large and consistent body of human trials behind it and a dose-response relationship that has been quantified across studies. Whether it relieves the symptoms people call constipation is a narrower and less consistent finding than the stool-weight data.

What may be going on: Coarse insoluble fibre resists fermentation, holds water in the stool and mechanically stimulates the colon wall, increasing stool mass and propulsion.

Insoluble fibre does not slow starch digestion the way viscous soluble fibre does, and trials adding wheat bran generally report little change in post-meal glucose, even though cereal fibre intake is associated with lower diabetes risk in cohorts.
