Bowel regularity
Chicory-derived inulin increases stool frequency and softens stool consistency across a substantial body of randomised trials, and this is one of the few food-fibre effects that regulators have accepted. The effect is modest, it depends on dose, and the same fermentation causes the wind that leads many people to stop taking it.
What may be going on: Fermentation of inulin in the colon increases bacterial mass and water retention in the stool, and short-chain fatty acid production stimulates motility.
Moderate evidence. Several human studies point the same way, with real caveats.
