    Turnip contains progoitrin, which yields goitrin on breakdown. Goitrin interferes with thyroid hormone synthesis more directly than the thiocyanates in leafy brassicas, though the amounts in ordinary portions are small and cooking reduces them.

    Turnip carries fructans and is restricted in the elimination phase of a low-FODMAP diet. Bloating and wind are the usual complaint at larger servings.
