    Annonacin and atypical parkinsonism

    Soursop contains annonacin, a mitochondrial toxin found across the Annona genus. Case-control work in Guadeloupe found an unusually high rate of atypical parkinsonism among people with heavy lifelong intake of Annona fruit, leaves and infusions, and animal studies show annonacin produces similar brain lesions. Regulatory bodies have advised against habitual heavy consumption, particularly of leaf teas and supplements, which are far more concentrated than the fruit.

    Graviola supplements marketed for cancer

    Soursop leaf capsules and extracts are widely sold with implied anticancer benefits on the basis of cell-culture studies. No human trial supports that use, the extracts carry the highest annonacin exposure, and people have delayed effective care on the strength of it.

    Seeds are toxic and irritant

    Soursop seeds are rich in acetogenins, have been used as an insecticide, and have caused severe eye inflammation when preparations reached the eye. They are strained out of pulp and juice.
