    Undercooked common beans and phytohaemagglutinin

    Pinto beans are the same species as red kidney beans and carry the same lectin at lower levels. Soak, discard the soaking water, then boil vigorously for at least ten minutes before simmering. Slow cookers running below boiling point are specifically implicated in lectin poisonings and are not a safe substitute for that initial hard boil.
